The City of Lago Vista contracts with Progressive Waste Solutions to provide solid waste collection service to the city’s residents. However, the City maintains administration of the program.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING TRASH OR RECYCLING SERVICES, CALL THE UTILITY DEPARTMENT AT (512) 267-1155. PLEASE DO NOT CALL PROGRESSIVE WASTE SOLUTIONS.
Trash is picked up once per week, and recycling is picked up every other week. For new customers, garbage and recycling carts are provided and will be delivered to your residence upon requesting utility service.
If your assigned collection day falls on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Year’s Day, your trash will be picked up on the following day.
Garbage and recycling carts must be placed curbside within 5 feet of the curbside or right-of-way adjacent to the residential unit, with the cart facing the street and the wheels next to the curb, no later than 7:00 am on your scheduled collection day. We suggest setting bins out the evening before. Garbage and recycling are collected by different trucks and will not be picked up at the same time.
In accordance with the City of Lago Vista Code of Ordinances, Chapter 6 Health and Sanitation, Article 6.100 Garbage and Rubbish, Section 6.102 (f) General Regulations, “Each dwelling shall have solid waste containers which must be inaccessible to dogs and other animals and which should be concealed insofar as possible from viewing from a public street or adjoining properties. Arrangements should be made for waste pick up so that containers are visible on waste pick up days and are immediately returned to normal storage areas within twelve (12) hours after trash pick-up.”
Up to three (3) additional bags will be picked up in addition to any trash and/or recycling bins. Any additional bags should have a maximum capacity of 35 gallons and may not exceed 35 pounds.
Tree, shrub, and brush trimmings, newspapers, and magazines are accepted if they are securely tied together forming an easily handled package not exceeding cubic yards (6' x 3' x 3'), 4 foot lengths, 4 inch diameter or exceeding 50 pounds. You may also take tree, shrub, and brush trimmings to the City’s Green Center on the 1st Saturday of each month. Visit the Green Center page for more information.
Citizens may place a total of up to 2 cubic yards of bulky waste items, such as refrigerators and freezers (if they are bearing a sticker certifying that the Freon has been removed by a certified technician), stoves, water heaters, washers, dryers, furniture, and other similar household waste items, by their trash cart on collection days. Please note, however, that on occasion the trucks may run out of space for such bulky items, and they will try to pick them up on your next regularly scheduled collection day. If they are unable to pick up your bulky items, you must remove them from the curb in accordance with City ordinance (see above) and replace them curbside on your next regularly scheduled collection day.
In addition, the City conducts two annual City Clean Up events (usually in the spring and fall) where citizens may dispose of additional non-hazardous waste. Notice of date and time of the Clean Up Days will be posted on our website and included with your utility bill.
ITEMS NOT ACCEPTED: Rocks, dirt, bricks, car batteries, oil, and oil filters. The deposit of cinders or ashes in trash receptacles is prohibited.
CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED: Waste building materials resulting from construction, remodeling, repair, or demolition which include, but are not limited to, carpet, sheet rock, lumber, siding, shingles, concrete, wire, rebar, tile, etc. are not accepted.
HAZARDOUS WASTE IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
Using a single cart for all recycling as opposed to multiple bins sorted by type makes it easy for residents to recycle and help reduce waste.
What can you recycle? You can now recycle the following materials:
Plastics #1 - #5 & #7, including water, soda, and juice bottles; Milk jugs, shampoo, conditioner and liquid soap bottles; detergent bottles, bleach, and all-purpose cleaner bottles; margarine tubs, yogurt containers, empty medicine bottles, clean frozen food trays, plastic lids from bottles, plastic takeout containers, plastic produce containers, plastic disposable plates, cups, and utensils (check for recycling number).
Paper, Newspapers and inserts, magazines, catalogs, junk mail and envelopes (no product samples; envelope labels and windows are OK), boxboard (thin cardboard like cereal boxes, shoe boxes, soda cartons, etc.), holiday and greeting cards, phone books, home office paper (stickies, manila envelopes, file folders, and paper ream wrappers are permitted), and paper bags, excluding gift bags.
Metals, including aluminum soda cans; tin and steel cans, such as soup and tuna cans; empty aerosol cans; and metal lids from glass jars.
Glass, including clear, green, and amber glass. Place glass containers and their metal lids in your recycling cart with all your recyclables. You do not need to remove labels.

When do you recycle?
Every other week, you will place your recycling and trash carts on your regular pick up day. The City is divided into alternating "A" and "B" weeks. If your regular trash pick up day is Thursday and you are in week "A", then you will put your trash and recycling out one week, and the following Thursday you put only your trash out.
Please refer to our map, street index, and calendar to determine your recycling week.
